Residents of Verem have raised strong objections to the installation of anchors in the Mandovi river, reportedly intended for casino boats, in an area known for tisryo (clam) harvesting. Locals fear the move will damage the riverbed and threaten the livelihood of traditional fishermen who depend on clam collection.
In a meeting held with Saligao MLA Kedar Naik, villagers conveyed their concerns about ecological damage and loss of heritage. MLA Naik assured them that no casino vessel would be permitted to anchor in Verem, reaffirming his support for the local community.
The residents resolved to draft a memorandum addressed to the Captain of Ports, government ministers, and relevant authorities, demanding immediate intervention. Fishermen argued that the Verem stretch is unsuitable for anchoring due to its ecological significance. The community vowed to resist any move that compromises their traditional fishing zones.
