WHY SALMAN KHAN IS LEAVING GALAXY APARTMENTS AFTER LIVING THERE FOR 52 YEARS

After calling Mumbai’s iconic Galaxy Apartments home for more than five decades, Bollywood superstar Salman Khan is reportedly preparing to move into a newly constructed family residence in Bandra West. The move marks the end of an era for one of the city’s most recognisable celebrity homes, which has long been associated with the Khan family and thousands of fans who gather outside every year on Eid and the actor’s birthday.

The story of Galaxy Apartments dates back to Salman Khan’s father, veteran screenwriter Salim Khan. Before becoming one of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated writers, Salim struggled to establish himself in Mumbai after leaving Indore. He initially lived in a shared guest house, paying just Rs 55 a month in rent while pursuing acting opportunities. After years of hardship and several small roles, he shifted to screenwriting, a decision that transformed his career through the legendary Salim-Javed partnership.

Following the massive success of Zanjeer in 1973, Salim Khan was finally able to purchase a flat in Galaxy Apartments. Salman was only eight years old when the family moved there, and despite becoming one of India’s biggest film stars, he chose to continue living in the modest first-floor one-bedroom apartment while his parents stayed on the floor above.

Over the years, Salman often explained that Galaxy Apartments represented far more than just a residence. The building was home to neighbours who had known him since childhood, long before fame arrived. It also became a landmark for fans from across the country who regularly visited hoping to catch a glimpse of the actor from his famous balcony.

According to reports, the Khan family is now shifting to a newly built six-storey residence on Chimbai Road in Bandra West. The move is said to be driven mainly by privacy and enhanced security following recent threats against the actor. Even so, Galaxy Apartments will continue to hold a special place in Bollywood history as the home where Salman Khan grew up and built one of Indian cinema’s most successful careers.
