SANGUEM: Demonetisation had a very limited impact on the traders in Sanguem taluka, except for the first month when hard cash was not available and sales plummeted. However, the situation improved in Sanguem market after a few months of demonetization, as the buyers belong to the same locality and procurement were generally small, mainly for domestic use.
It may come as a surprise to many, but there is not a single wholesale dealer in Sanguem, except in the liquor business.
Deepak Naik, a hardware dealer said demonetisation did not have any effect on his day-to-day business activity and for the first few days of demonetisation the business was slow, as people did not have cash in hand to make purchases. But as new currency began exchanging hands, the business was normal.
The proprietor of Dego Tyres and Lubricants Gurunath Naik also shared similar views and claimed that people who had stacked hard cash in huge quantity faced problems, not small-time businessman.
He said business in Sanguem continued as usual even during the time of demonetization.
Laximi Gaonkar, a housewife, was however skeptical of the demonetisation process, as she had to spend a couple of days to exchange the little money she had.
Ironically, though a large number of business houses in all towns and cities have opted for POS machines not a single shop owner and business house in Sanguem have a POS machine till now.
Even after a year since demonetisation and government effort to go digital, lack of proper knowledge among the rural folk have desisted the market traders in Sanguem not to opt for POS machines.
