PANJIM: A woman rider was killed and another suffered serious injuries when a JCB earthmover ran into them including three other vehicles after its brake failed, near NIO circle on Tuesday evening.
The deceased identified as Rupali Dhapre, 37, from Pune succumbed while undergoing treatment at Goa Medical College on Wednesday morning. Prajakta Deshmukh, 42, also a Pune-resident suffered hand and leg fracture.
Panjim police said JCB driver Rizwan Ansari, hailing from Ranchi is absconding since the occurrence of the accident.
The Dona Paula road stretch from NIO circle till the Manipal Hospital has been a nuisance since the PWD had dug up for sewer work, several months ago. The potholes filled with mud have not only slowed the traffic movement along this stretch but have also become prone to accidents for commuters.
Meanwhile, the police have begun an investigation into the accident and sought reports from the departments concerned.
