PANJIM: In the case that has become the talking point across the State, Vishranti Gawas, the accused in the kidnapping of a month-old child at Goa Medical College (GMC) has been remanded to five days police custody. The order was issued by the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Panjim on Sunday.

The police said the accused, who has been kept at the Agassaim police station, has confessed to the crime. Furthermore, after recording all the statements, the infant has been handed over to his mother, a native of Odisha on Sunday afternoon after she identified the child.
However, in light of the kidnapper’s claim that the baby is her child, DNA tests are likely to be conducted to ascertain the real mother of the baby.
It may be recalled that the accused was caught at her home in Saleli village, Valpoi, with the baby on Saturday evening. The baby was kidnapped from the GMC premises on Friday. Multiple police teams including Crime Branch were involved in solving the case.
Meanwhile, Ministers, BJP as well as leaders from opposition parties hailed the efforts by nearly a dozen police teams in finding the baby safe and arresting the accused.
Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said, “Congratulations to Goa Police and the Valpoi Police force for their commendable efforts in successfully rescuing a one-month old child within 24 hrs of reporting. Our police force is committed to ensuring the safety of the citizens.”
Sandesh Sadhale, Media convener of BJP Goa, issued a media statement congratulating the team for a successful manhunt of the kidnapper and rescue of the baby.
