MARGAO: Women from Belatemb-Cuncolim are up in arms over pollution from factories operating in the Cuncolim Industrial Estate.
The women took to the streets to complain about the acute pollution, exposing them and their children to health hazards.
The pointed out that thick black smoke settle down in their houses every day, making life miserable, with no action forthcoming from the concerned authorities.
Succorina Coutinho said that residents of around 60 households are suffering the brunt of the Industrial estate day in and out. “These factories use coal for their production. Resultantly, ash and carbon settle down in our houses. We cannot even put clothes for drying in the open. The industrial estate have made our lives miserable, but there’s no one to bail us out”, she said.
She pointed out that the smoke generated in the factories does not come out of the chimneys, but billows out of the sheds, only to settle down in their neighbourhood.
Another women Sumeda Naik said they are only demanding justice from acute pollution in the area. “We have knocked the doors of the local MLA and other authorities. Now, we will call for the intervention of the Chief Minister to come to our rescue from this pollution”, she added.
