Addressing students of S S Dempo College on the topic ‘Bad Politics Makes for Worse Economics’ on Saturday, he said that developed nations have focused on good infrastructure that has led to growing job opportunities and high purchasing power. He also highlighted the power of Indian youth as he mentioned that politics and economics go hand in hand.
“Indians are practically running Silicon Valley in the US and are at prominent positions in NASA and other premium science centres. Hundreds of them are leading scientists in Switzerland and 40 percent in NASA are of Indian origin,” he said.
He added, “We need to help our youth by providing them the right opportunities and we have the resources to do that. Every year in the annual budget, the Finance Minister reads out a statement on tax foregone. This amounts to close to Rs five lakh crore, which is legitimate revenue to the country. The government should pursue this and direct it towards development of the Indian youth and create infrastructure.”
He further stated that giving opportunities to youth will make India a knowledge society. “No country has developed without building infrastructure. We need to build this and this will generate lakhs of new jobs. People will have the purchasing power. This will lead to the growth of manufacturing and industries,” he said.
Elaborating on his success formula, he explained, “Goa needs to move away from heavy industries to a greater focus on the services sector and the IT sector, both of which are sustainable and environment friendly. But this kind of growth needs good politics.”
