Belgaum border closure doesn’t hamper fish trade in Vasco

DHIRAJ HARMALKAR
Despite fears that the recent closure of the Goa- Belgaum highway would affect the sale of fish at the Vasco market, customers managed to get the quantity of fish they had wanted.
The highway was closed due to the road widening work at the Anmod Ghat, which posed a road block for trucks coming from the Mollem check post. However, according to traders at the market, they got their local catch and other indigenous fishes from non-mechanized fishing, which in turn did not alter the fish supply to the people of Vasco.
However, fish vendors added that the price of fish has increased due to high demand and that the supply, while is coming through is not at the scale at which is it is supplied when the ban is not in place.
