MARGAO: Alesh Sawant netted in the 90th minute as Churchill Brothers Sports Club narrowly edged out Sporting Clube de Goa 1-0 in GFA’s Taca Goa U-20 League, at Tilak Maidan, Vasco, on Wednesday.
The match was goalless at the interval. Sporting Clube went into the match with majority of the players injured and it only got worse when their midfielder Olan Chandran had to be replaced due to an injury by Prajyot Kerkar.
The first half was pretty even, with both sides coming close to surging ahead.
There were warning signs for Sporting Clube as Alesh’s fiery shot was wonderfully saved by the Flaming Orange custodian.
Sporting Clube created some chances as Chatur Naik’s effort was kept out.
After resumption, the Flaming Oranje had a golden opportunity to take the lead from a corner as Lesten Martins came agonising close only to see his shot go marginally wide off the post.
With time running out, Churchill’s right back Elvis Barreto pumped a long hopeful free kick forward which bounced into the path of Alesh who kept his composure to score the winner to spark off wild celebrations in the Red Machines camp.
Stung by that setback, Sporting Clube went all out but the rival defenders stood tall in protecting their slender lead.
