The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to extend the tenure of Ajit Agarkar as chairman of the senior men’s selection committee until June 2027. His current contract was nearing its end, but with the ICC Cricket World Cup scheduled for late 2027, the board has opted for continuity in leadership.
Agarkar, who took charge in July 2023, has overseen one of India’s most successful white-ball phases in recent years. During his tenure, India reached the 2023 ODI World Cup final and went on to win multiple ICC trophies, including the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups and the 2025 Champions Trophy. His tenure has been marked by bold decisions and a focus on building a younger core, particularly in T20Is.

One of his notable calls was backing Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain ahead of Hardik Pandya, while fast-tracking Shubman Gill into leadership roles in Tests and ODIs. These decisions, made in consultation with senior figures like Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid, have helped shape a new-look Indian team.
Under Agarkar, India have maintained an impressive win-loss ratio, outperforming other top teams such as Australia national cricket team. However, challenges remain in red-ball cricket, especially after the retirements of senior players like Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin, which triggered a transition phase.
The BCCI’s decision to extend Agarkar’s tenure also reflects a desire for stability within the selection panel, which includes relatively newer members. While white-ball success has been significant, the focus now shifts to improving Test performances and grooming young players for long-term success.
