Mitchell Starc has been cleared by Cricket Australia to travel to India and join the ongoing Indian Premier League, providing a timely boost to Delhi Capitals. The 36-year-old left-arm pacer is expected to be available for selection in Delhi’s upcoming clash against Rajasthan Royals on May 1.
Starc had been sidelined due to elbow and shoulder injuries sustained during the Australian summer. Despite the setbacks, he played a pivotal role in The Ashes, featuring in all five Tests and emerging as Player of the Series in Australia’s dominant 4-1 victory. He later turned out for Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League before being forced out due to fitness concerns.
His return comes as a significant development for both Delhi and Australia. Starc wasn’t the only Australian pace spearhead to miss the initial phase of the IPL, with Pat Cummins yet to feature this season. Cummins, however, is expected to make his first appearance this weekend, while Josh Hazlewood has recently regained full fitness. Their availability is a major positive for Australia as they prepare for a packed schedule of 20 Tests ahead of the next ODI World Cup.
In Starc’s absence, Lungi Ngidi has led Delhi’s overseas pace attack, picking up seven wickets in six matches. While Delhi Capitals began their campaign strongly with two wins, they have since struggled, losing three of their last four matches. Starc’s inclusion could prove crucial in reviving their season.
