MAPUSA: Hosts Candolim Sports Club were stretched into the penalty shootout before they finally got the better of their opponents Saligao Sporting Club by 3-1 margin to lift the Lakanpal Novino Soccer Cup, at Dr Gustavo Monteiro ground, Candolim, recently.
The first 20 minutes of the match were equally contested with both the defence giving no room for the strikers to have a clear look at their goals.
Finally, Candolim surged ahead where Anson D’Souza lobbed the ball into the goal over the onrushing Saligao keeper Augustine D’Mello to give the lead.
Hardly into the second session and Saligao Sporting levelled terms, as Michael Dias guided the ball into the nets off a superb cross by Sachidanand Satelkar to make it 1-1.
In the penalty shoot-out, Saligao colts failed to score while Candolim got their goals from Anthony Fernandes and Suraj Kanthankar.
Gabriel Fernandes, FC Pune was the chief guest and gave away the prizes to the winners and runners-up in the presence of Lavinio Rebello-GFA Vice President, Special invitee Rajendra Tiwari-Manager Lakhanpal Pvt. Ltd, Pratesh Shirodkar, FC Goa and Babli Mandrekar and match officials.
