MARGAO: A late strike by striker Fredric Endro enabled Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club to register a 3-2 win over Curtorim Gymkhana and cruise into the semi-finals of All-Goa 4th Mae dos Pobres inter-village football tournament organized by Nuvem Sports Club at church ground, Nuvem, Wednesday. The score was 1-1 at the breather.
Areal had the lion’s share of exchanges and took the lead in the 10th minute when striker Silvester Carvalho who was in the thick of action beat the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot.
Down by an early goal, Curtorim Gymkhana raised the tempo and created several forays. They restored parity through John Fernandes.
Crossing over, persistent forays by Areal forwards paid off when Bersel Viegas outpaced his markers and punted the ball to the far corner of the net off a fine pass from Silvester Carvalho.
After a brief lull, Curtorim intensified their forays and neutralized the lead when Savio Fernandes unleashed a stiff grounder which beat the rival goalkeeper hands down.
With time running out, Areal made a last ditch effort and their efforts bore fruit when striker Fredric Endro’s power-packed volley crashed into the net.
