MAPUSA: Dempo SC registered a well-deserved 2-0 victory over Calangute Association in the Goa Professional League match played at the Duler Stadium, on Wednesday.
Dempo struck a goal in each half through defender Stenis Touthang and striker Swavel Furtado to seal the points.
After missing numerous goal-scoring opportunities, the Dempo colts went into the breather courtesy of Stenis Touthang’s opening goal.
In the 21st minute, a curling corner by Arnold Oliveira was brilliantly met by a glancing header from defender Touthang to put Dempo ahead 1-0.
Just four minutes later, Calangute Association missed a golden chance to restore parity when Melvin Lobo’s header, off a delivery from skipper Mehbub Hublikar, narrowly missed the target.
Another opportunity was squandered soon after, this time by Joywin Carneiro, who fumbled while attempting to connect with Sanjay Vengurlekar’s cross into the Dempo goal.
As the match progressed, Dempo continued to press, with Salgeo Dias missing three clear sitters, while Murphy Fernandes saw his effort blocked by a Calangute defender.
At the change of ends, Dempo coach Remus Gomes replaced Salgeo Dias with Velancio Rodrigues, while Calangute coach Anthony D’Souza brought on Vishesh Nasnodkar in place of Sidharth Kundaikar.
Murphy Fernandes later saw his strike from inside the 18-yard box parried out for a corner by Calangute custodian Aditya Sharma.
However, in the 53rd minute, goalkeeper Aditya could do little to prevent Swavel Furtado from guiding the ball into the net off a Murphy Fernandes cross to make it 2-0.
Dempo’s Stenis Touthang was presented the man-of-the-match award by GFA Executive Committee member Johnny Pereira.
