MAPUSA, FEB 4: A jubilant Jeovito Fernandes came off the bench to keep up his goal scoring form, netting the winner for Dempo Sports Club as they overcame St Sebastian Sports Club, Santa Cruz 2-1 in GFA’s 2nd division at DSYA ground, Santa cruz on Friday. Dempo led 1-0 at the lemon break.
In a high intense match, the referee was kept busy handing out seven yellow cards in total. Ashley Rodrigues, Savio Pereira, Lino de Araujo and Custodio D’Cunha were booked for St Sebastian. Wellington Fernandes, Bharat Thapa and Tyson Fernandes were the Dempo players booked.
Dempo attacked dangerously down the wings, with the full backs overlapping the wingers to exert pressure on their opponents. Mandaro Dessai was particularly efficient as he dribbled through two and three defenders at a time and made his crosses count. His pace also allowed him to get into good goal scoring opportunities, but he failed to keep his composure.
St Sebastian started the match defensively with a five-man midfield which tried to stop their opponents from holding onto possession. In the second half a few substitutions in midfield allowed them to attack more.
Dempo opened the scoring in the 26th minute when Jorex Fernandes got on the end of a Tyson Fernandes cross to slot home.
A few minutes later Dilip Rodrigues was unlucky as he rattled the crossbar with a shot for St Sebastian.
In the 71st minute, St Sebastian equalized through Dilip Rodrigues who volleyed in a corner taken by Lino de Araujo.
Four minutes later Dempo reassured their superiority, when Mandoro Dessai crossed from the left and Wellington Fernandes played the ball back for Jeovito to smash into the back of the net.
