Dhargal to host all-India volleyball championship

Dhargal, which has been in the news due to the upcoming Sports City for the National Games, will for the first time host an all-India volleyball championship from April 20-24 at Panchayat court, Dhargal, Pernem.
The tournament which has already been approved by Volleyball Federation of India (VFI), will be organised by Shirgal Sports Club in association with Diamond Sports Club, Sarvajanik Ganesh Mandal, Dhargal, Arabo Sports Club and Abhijit Sports Club, Dhargal.
Shirgal’s general secretary, Jit Arolkar, Goa’s top State volleyball player, stated that this will a mega event featuring six teams in the men’s event. Players of international and national repute will be seen in action, Jit disclosed.
Volleyball needs to be revitilised, since there is talent aplenty, although competitions on sustained basis are the need of the hour, Jit stated. It has been generally felt that the standard is stagnating for pretty long time now, with only the clubs keeping it afloat.
Sports Minister, Manohar (Babu) Azgaonkar is the patron-in-chief of the organising committee.
When organised, it will be the first-ever all-India volleyball championship to be held in North Goa, with the previous ones organised by clubs in Margao (BPS), Vasco (St Andrew’s Parish Club) and Curtorim (Wilred Leisure).
