CHICALIM: Tiswadi powerhouse Don Bosco High School, Panjim had to sweat it out to beat Marina English High School, Verna 6-5 via the tie-breaker to make their maiden entry into the finals of the 4th all-Goa Baptist Fernandes Memorial inter-school football tournament organised by Goa Soccer Centre and played, at the Chicalim panchayat ground, Chicalim, on Wednesday.
In an exciting encounter, it was Don Bosco who shone for the first 5 minutes but Marina English gradually took over.
In the second half, it was a battle for supremacy, Marina English were indeed unlucky as two brilliant shots in the dying minutes shook the goalposts. Thereafter in the tie-breaker, Don Bosco prove to be the better shooters.
In the quarter-finals matches, Infant Jesus HS, Colva put up a gallant fight before losing to Don Bosco 2-1, St Joseph’s High School Calangute beat former champions Fr Agnel Multipurpose High School, Verna 1-0. Our Lady of Snows HS Raia lost to Our Lady of Rosary School, Fatorda via the tie-breaker, and Marina English HS, Verna beat Kings HS, Margao 3-0.
In the semi-finals of Group B, Don Bosco HS, Panjim beat St Joseph High School, Calangute 6-5 via the tie-breaker in a superb encounter after both the teams were locked 1-1 at full time. In the second semi-finals of the group, Marina English HS, Verna beat Our Lady of Rosay HS, Fatorda 1-0.
Group A winners Loyola High School, Margao will clash with Group B winners Don Bosco High School, Panjim in the finals.
The Finals will be preceded by an exhibition match between Vasco and Verna Veterans.
A number of former national, International and School Footballers Like Dionisio Trindade, Oswald D Costa, Francis D Souza (Dempo), Anthony Rebello, Digambar Haldankar, Sanjeev Nagvenkar, Tiago Fernandes, Bharat Morjee will grace the finals to motivate the young talent.
