MARGAO: FC Goa defeated Churchill Brothers 2-1 in their All India Football Federation U-13 Youth League, held at the Chowgule college ground, on Sunday.
A long shot from FC Goa ‘s Rayan Mendes was punched away by Churchill Brothers goalkeeper Jay Sharma.
FC Goa’s forward Salgeo Fernandes got himself into a promising position but scuffed his shot. Salgeo had another opportunity when he poked a shot that Jay saved with a low diving save.
Nathan Rodrigues of Churchill Brothers went off injured as they were put under a lot of pressure by FC Goa.They created another opportunity when their skipper Sahil Inamdar shot a free-kick that was awkwardly saved by Jay.
The teams went into half-time at 0-0.
Just minutes into second half, Salgeo shot low and tested Jay who saved it.
FC Goa were quick with their feet and with their passes as Churchill Brothers were constantly put under pressure.
For all his toils, Salgeo got his reward in the 41st minute. A defensive mix-up between Churchill Brothers’ Clarence Fernandes and goalkeeper saw Clarence attempt to pass the ball back to Jay.
But Salgeo got in behind the two and shot the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper.FC Goa deservingly led 1-0.
They could have scored again when Davis tried a header which flew just inches above the goal.
Sahil Inamdar also had a shot saved by Jay as FC Goa were in top form.
They went 2-0 up in the 48th minute when a powerful shot from Francisco Fernandes beat Jay all ends up.
Churchill Brothers did pull a goal back in the 62nd minute through Oscar Braganza.
