PANJIM: Sporting Clube de Goa players and officials joined friends, relatives and fellow Saligao villagers to bid a touching farewell to upcoming soccer star Avrhishto Fernandes whose promising football career came to an abrupt end with his tragic death in the early morning of New Year 2018.
Avrhishto’s coffin  draped in the Sporting Clube flag,  was borne by his team-mates,  wearing the Club’s  white away colours,  first into an overflowing Mae de Deus Church for mass and then for the final rites to the cemetery.
In his well preached homily during mass, Fr. George Dias did his best to tackle the difficult task of explaining to the gathering, how God could allow such a young, talented football star and an exemplary model character like Avrhisto, to end his life in such a manner. Most importantly he advised the youth present the importance of talking and opening out to someone in times of stress and pressure.
The funeral was also attended by Deputy Speaker Michael Lobo, GFA Exco Member Patrick D’Souza, Calangute Association Coach Alex Alvares, Sporting Clube President Peter Vaz, CEO Victor Fernandes, Manager Angelo Albuquerque, Coaches Mateus D’Costa, Peter Vales, Shekar Kerkar, Savio Vaz, Seby Noronha and Anthony Vas.
