GM Leon wins Baku Open

PANJIM: Geno and Microsense brand ambassador  Grand Master Leon Luke Mendonca scored an impressive unbeaten 7/9 to win the Baku Open 2023 in Azerbaijan.

 Leon performed at 2732 and gained 14.60 Elo rating points, taking his live rating to 2622. He is currently ranked 11th in the World’s Juniors list.

 In this 9-round format tournament, a total of 122 players participated, of which 118 were titled players, including 32 GMs, 29 IMs, 11 WGMs and 7 WIMs from 14 countries across the globe.

 Serbia’s No.3 GM Aleksandar Indjic and Belarus GM Vladislav Kovalev scored 7/9 each. They were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks.

 Teenager Leon has so far been performing brilliantly in 2023, having won three first places, two third places and one fourth place, from March to May, fantastic three months indeed.

Leon will participate in 6th Sharjah Masters starting on May 17.
