FATORDA: Goa Hockey Promoters defeated Goa Velha SC 2-1 via the tie-breaker to clinch the Goans Hockey Cup in the final of the Women Hockey tournament organized by Goans Hockey outside the PJN Stadium ground, Fatorda, on Wednesday.
Goa Velha SC started the game on an attacking formation with Manjita making moves upfront but goalkeeper Annite D’Costa of Goa Hockey Promoters was equal to the task to thwart the moves.
Manjita’s direct hit from four-yard would have earned a dividend to Goa Velha SC in the third minute but rival goalkeeper Annite blocked the move. It was Felicity for Goa Velha SC in the fourth minute who hit a direct shot in the goal but Annite denied it. Soon, Fazana Dodmani of Goa Hockey Promoters failed to connect a ball from Viega Fernandes in the 7th minute.
Manjita of Goa Velha SC in the 10th minute hit blindly and the ball sailed atleast four feet away from the rival target. Sushma Mayeshwari too had a chance to score for Goa Velha SC but hit wide in the 21st minute.
In the second half, both the teams tried to score the match winner but Goa Hockey Promoters too started attacking from the left flanks with Merica Fernandes and Elida but the rival goalkeeper brought in some good saves in the 56th and 58th minutes. Merica shot wide on both the occasions. Manjita of Goa Velha SC was denied scoring by Annite in the 59th minute.
At the end of regulation time, the score was 0-0.
In the resultant tie-breaker, Goa Hockey Promoters netted through Viega Fernandes and Merica Fernandes while only Felcity scored for Goa Velha SC.
Vice President Benny Viegas of Goan Hockey gave away the prizes to winners and runners-up in the presence of Alitor Fernandes, Lister Gurago and Anthony Vaz.
