Goa not prepared for Nat Games: Narvekar
* ‘Goa University yet to implement Sports Policy’

“I have my doubts if Goa is prepared for hosting the National Games in 2012,” remarked Dayanand Narvekar, MLA here today.
“The National Games will be conducted by the Goa Government and till date, the sports associations have no knowledge about the programme. That apart, Goa does not have teams which are fit to be fielded in many events,” stated Narvekar.
“There is no point in participating in National Games for the sake of participation. At the end of the day, winning medals matters most. Besides, Goa does not have the required infrastructure to hold some games like cycling. Hence, the State should not host the Games unless it is fully geared up from all angles,” opined Narvekar.
Meanwhile, Narvekar who has been appointed as Chairman of the ad-hoc committe of Sports, Information Technology and Education by the Goa Government, disclosed that due to the implementation of Sports Policy by the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, around 1800 students had benefited. Due to allocation of additional marks to the students who participated in sports activities, the pass percentage of students has increased by 10%,” said Narvekar.
Narvekar pointed out that the Sports Policy had not been implementing by Goa University as yet. The committee has, therefore, written a letter to Vice-Chancellor and Registrar of Goa University requesting them to implement the Sports Policy from this year so that more students engaged in sports activities will get benefit. “They may have some problem in implementing the Sports Policy for professional courses such as Engineering and Mediine where attendance is of utmost importance but they can implement it for Arts, Commerce and Vocational streams without any problem, stated Narvekar.
Narvekar also stated that his committee had suggested to the government to reduce the percentage of attendance in schools and colleges from the present 25 to 15, especially for National and international players so that the students can focus fully on their sports in right earnest.
