MARGAO: Goa Velha Sports Club booked their place in the quarter-final of all-Goa Velim Panchayat Cup inter-village football tournament organized by Sports Welfare Club of Zaino when they registered a 5-4 tie-breaker victory over Verna Sports Club at Zaino ground, Zaino-Velim, Monday. They led 1-0 at the break.
Goa Velha dominated the opening stanza with their forwards and midfielders working in tandem to put the rival defenders under tremendous pressure. They broke the deadlock in the 15th minute when striker Royden Camelo punished the rival goalkeeper with a clinical finish.
Verna did create some openings but their strikers failed to get past the rival rearguard.
Post resumption, Goa Velha continued to enjoy the same advantage like in the first half, creating a couple of forays but their forwards ran out of ideas after reaching the rival danger zone.
With time ticking out, Verna made desperate efforts which bore fruit with a minute for the final whistle with Richard Dias finding the equalizer.
In the tie-breaker, Joseph Rodrigues, Denzil Cabral, Royden Camelo and Vishant Pednekar found the mark for Goa Velha while Basil Rego, Matheus Abranches and Santan Rego converted for Verna.
