Govind stars for Saligao

A fine brace by Govind Mahale took Saligao Sporting Club into the quarter-finals edging out Curtorim Gymkhana 2-1- in 37th Bandodkar Memorial Football Trophy tournament organized by Baina Sports Club at MPT ground, here on Tuesday.
With midfield play for about 20 minutes, Govind Mahale opened the account for Saligao Sporting accepting a short pass from Purshottam Kavlekar in the 23rd minute (1-0).
After change of ends, Curtorim threw a scare with attacks from Primo Fernandes, Rock Carneiro, Roy Albuquerque, Sertorio Monteiro.
With Saligao defenders Vijendra Shetye, Nagendra Kumar and Allan Gonsalves in top form, Curtorim found it difficult to score.
Curtorim never gave up and substitute Simon Fernandes of Saligao handled the ball in the danger zone which forced referee Kashinath Pawar to point to the dreaded spot and Roque Carneiro converted it. That was in the 40th minute (1-1).
The never-say-die attitude of Saligao forwards led by Johnny Menezes, Purshottam Kavlekar and Govind Mahale saw the last named making the issue safe for Saligao Sporting as he completed his brace five minutes from end.
Curtorim’s Sertorio Monteiro was declared man-of-the match and was handed over the prize at the hands of Rajan Bhosle, president, Baina Sports Club.
