Guirdolim Club take home Navelim Villagers Union trophy

RAIA: Guirdolim Club outplayed Canacona Sports and Cultural Club 3-1 via tie-breaker to emerge champions in the Navelim Villagers Union trophy played at Rosary football ground, Navelim, on Wednesday.

Both teams displayed a good brand of soccer in front of more than 6,000 spectators. Both teams failed to score in the full time.

In the resultant tie-breaker – Gail, Vitorino and Rizbon netted for Guirdolim Club while only Terrance Lobo scored for Canacona Sports and Cultural Club. Winners Guirdolim Club were richer by Rs 60,000 plus trophy while Canacona Sports and Cultural Club had to be content with a purse of Rs 40,000 and a trophy. 

Chief guest former chief minister of Goa and former member of parliament Churchill Alemao gave away the prizes to winners and runners-up in the presence of guest of honour AIFF Women Chairman Valanka Alemao, special invite Fr Valentine Alvares, chaplain of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Chapel, Telaulim; Fr Dylan Da Costa, assistant parish priest of Our Lady of Rosary Church, Navelim; Edwin Cardozo, Zilla Parishad member Navelim; Sr Libia Fernandes, headmistress of Perpetual Succour Convent, Navelim; Lucia Carvalho, sarpanch, Navelim Village Panchayat; Fr Gabriel Coutinho, parish priest of Our Lady of Rosary Church, Navelim; other dignitaries and club officials.
