Few teams entered IPL 2026 with bigger expectations than Mumbai Indians. With stars like Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya in the squad, many expected Mumbai to challenge for the title once again.
Instead, the five-time champions suffered one of their worst seasons in recent years.

Mumbai finished ninth on the points table with only four wins from 14 matches. The campaign never truly took off after a promising opening victory over Kolkata Knight Riders. MI then lost seven of their next eight matches and spent most of the season near the bottom of the table.
The biggest disappointment was how disconnected the side looked throughout the tournament. The batting lacked consistency, the bowling attack leaked runs regularly and the team combinations kept changing almost every week.
Batting Failed To Deliver
Mumbai’s biggest strength on paper became one of their biggest problems during the season.
While Ryan Rickelton emerged as the team’s best batter with 448 runs at a strike rate of nearly 187, several senior players struggled badly. Suryakumar Yadav endured another difficult season, scoring only 270 runs at an average of 20.76. Rohit Sharma missed multiple games because of injury and was mostly used as an Impact Player after returning.

One of the few positives for MI was uncapped batter Naman Dhir, who impressed in multiple batting positions and continued proving himself under pressure.
Bowling Collapse Hurt MI Badly
Perhaps the most shocking part of Mumbai’s season was the bowling collapse.
Jasprit Bumrah, usually MI’s biggest match-winner, picked up only four wickets in 13 matches. Though his economy remained respectable, he looked far from his usual level and opposition teams simply targeted the bowlers around him.
Trent Boult struggled heavily, while Hardik Pandya, Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar all leaked runs consistently.

Young spinner Allah Ghazanfar was one of the few bright spots with 15 wickets, while Corbin Bosch impressed after joining midway through the season.
Hardik Pandya’s Captaincy Under Pressure
A lot of focus also remained on Hardik Pandya’s leadership.
Mumbai used 24 different players during IPL 2026 — a sign that the team management never settled on a fixed combination. Batting positions kept changing, bowling plans looked reactive and MI rarely appeared tactically clear during matches.
Since taking over as captain in 2024, Hardik has now lost 24 out of 39 matches as MI skipper. His own performances also dipped sharply this season with both bat and ball.
Bigger Questions For Mumbai Indians
For years, Mumbai Indians were known as the franchise that discovered future stars. Players like Bumrah, Hardik, Krunal Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav all rose through MI’s scouting system.
But IPL 2026 raised serious questions about whether that identity is fading.
Apart from Naman Dhir and brief flashes from a few youngsters, MI looked overly dependent on ageing stars and reputation rather than fresh talent.
The franchise now faces a major decision before IPL 2027 — continue backing this core group or begin a serious rebuild.
Because right now, Mumbai Indians look far away from being a championship-winning side again.
