Maria is the only FIFA-listed women’s referee from India. She is also the former captain of the India women’s football team.
When asked about her role from a player to a referee, Maria said, “There are many youngsters who are striving hard. In refereeing one can get more knowledge and can meet more people too.”
About the refereeing scenario in Goa, Maria feels that, “During the game some players make mistakes and they have to accept it. I am not afraid on making decisions which I feel are right and not afraid of any pressure on the field.”
Speaking on the development of sportspersons, Maria said, “Now there are all facilities available in sports but today’s youth need to show interest and practice hard.”
Currently, there are two more women referees on the list of FIFA referees in India, one from Bengal and the other from Tamil Nadu.
