The India women’s national under-17 football team stand on the brink of history as they prepare to face China women’s national under-17 football team in the quarterfinal of the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup on Monday, May 11. A victory in the knockout clash would secure India a place in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup — marking the first time an Indian football team qualifies for a FIFA tournament on merit.
India previously participated in the FIFA U17 Men’s World Cup in 2017 and the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in 2022 as hosts. However, no Indian side has ever earned qualification through competition.
Coached by Pamela Conti, the Young Tigresses reached the quarterfinals after finishing third in their group and emerging as the tournament’s second-best third-placed side. India sealed qualification after defeating Lebanon in their final group-stage encounter.
China, meanwhile, have looked dominant throughout the tournament. They topped Group A with commanding victories over Myanmar (6-0), Vietnam (3-0), and Thailand (6-0), making them one of the favourites for the title.
Ahead of the crucial encounter, Conti praised her team for scripting history by becoming the first Indian U17 women’s side to reach the last eight of the continental tournament.
“It is an incredible achievement. Nobody believed it was possible, but from the very first moment, I believed that if we trained differently, we could achieve what we have done,” Conti said after India’s qualification.
She acknowledged the challenge posed by China but remained hopeful of achieving another milestone. “We know China are a very strong team. We will try to achieve qualification for the World Cup, knowing how difficult it will be,” she added.
