PANJIM: Goa’s Maria Rebello expressed sheer joy over being appointed Referee Accessor at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup due to be hosted by India from October 11-30.
“I am super excited and lost for words,” she said on Wednesday when asked for her thoughts and feelings on her achievement.

“This tournament is very big for women’s football in India and I thank the Asian Football Confederation for nominating me for the role at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup,” she said.
“They have supported me and provided me with ample opportunities. I would also like to thank my well wishers in the All India Football Federation and the people of Goa,” Maria added.
She also took the opportunity to thank Executive Director, Sports Authority of Goa, Ajay Gaude, for his support.
“He had expressed excitement on her appointment,” she said. Maria also said she’s grateful to Arjuna awardee Bruno Coutinho. “He has always been supportive.”
Maria has a gleaming track record as both player and referee. She represented the country in five Asian Championships, and, in 2001 was captain of India.
In 1998 she was part of the team that qualified for the Asian Games in Bangkok.
“It was my dream to play in the World Cup which was not possible but now I have an opportunity to represent my country in the position I am selected,” she said.
