MAPUSA: Mandopa Sports Club, Navelim had to wait until the tie-breaker before scrapping past Candolim Sports Club 4-3 to move ahead in the Hotel Goan Heritage Soccer Cup, organized by Calangute Association, at Poriat ground, Calangute, on Tuesday.
It was Candolim who had a better look at the rival goal, however lady luck eluded them till the final whistle.
Navelim custodian Cleto Gomes put up a splendid performance under the horizontal bar as he came with a brilliant save in the 40th minute to parry away Kenneth D’Souza’s 20-yard strike and then fisted away Terrance D’Mello’s free-kick to the dismay of the Candolim outfit.
Post resumption, the teams went all out to score but their strikers left them frustrated as they squandered golden opportunities.
With none of the sides being able to break the deadlock the tie-breaker was implemented where Allan Gomes, Nevin Pereira, Jason Pereira and Clinton Pinto scored for Navelim while Terrance D’Souza, Russel Fernandes and Gauresh Shirodkar found the back of the nets for Candolim.
