MARGAO: Margao Sports Club prevailed over Nerul Sports Club 5-4 via tie-breaker to storm into the quarter-finals of All-Goa Jose Bento Furtado memorial inter-village football tournament organized by Goa Referees Association, at Rosary ground, Navelim, on Monday.
The teams were tied 1-1 at half time.
Both the teams started the game on cautious note, Margao Sports Club asserted the midfield supremacy and called the shots against the rival citadel. Margao trouble the rival rearguard with well orchestrated raids.
Francis Andrade rocked the rival citadel in the 13th minute when he unleashed a left footer to crash into the net.
Down by 0-1, Nerul Sports Club went all out in search of an equalizer and cancelled the lead in the 21st minute when striker Deepraj Sangalkar beat the rival goalkeeper with stiff grounder.
Post resumption, the teams went all out and had equal number of scoring chances but defenders stood tall in protecting their citadel.
With time running out, the teams adopted defensive approach on protecting the citadel with tight marking.
In the penalty shoot out, Clencio Pinto, Joel Camara, Danny Dias and Nicial Faleiro were on target for Margao Sports Club while Felix Barbosa, Rahul Borkar and Avinash Shirodkar converted for Nerul Sports Club.
