MARGAO: Navelim Veterans got the better of Chinchinim Veterans 2-1 to cruise into the semi-finals of all-Goa Sun Moon Stars veterans football tournament organized by Sun Moon Stars at panchayat ground, Chandor, Saturday. There was no score at half time.
Both teams displayed attacking football and kept the crowd on their toes.
Post resumption, Navelim put up a better display with their forwards working in tandem with the midfielders to put the rival defenders under tremendous pressure. They broke the deadlock soon after resumption when Mithun beat the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot.
Stunned by the reverse, Chinchinim regrouped quickly and took the fight to the rival camp and their efforts bore the fruit when Jerry Fernandes headed home off a flag-kick taken by Freddy Baretto to put his team on equal terms.
Stunned by the equalizer, Navelim went into an attacking mode and Salu found the match-winner late in the second half when he nodded in off a Frank Fernandes flag-kick.
Jerry Fernandes of Chinchinim was adjudged man-of-the-match.
On Thursday, Nuvem Veterans prevailed over Candolim Veternans 4-2 via the tie-breaker to enter the semi-finals. There was no score at full time.
In the tie-breaker, Xavier Colaco, Vincent Colaco, Vishant Pednekar and Alfred Cardozo were on target for Nuvem while Bruno Coutinho and Dundo converted for Candolim. Nicholas Silva of Candolim was adjudged man-of-the-match.
