VERNA: Our Lady of Rosary High School, Fatorda and Vasantrao Dempo Higher Secondary School of Science, Arts and Commerce had to sweat it out before recording identical 2-1 victories in the Reliance Foundation Youth Sports football tournament, on Wednesday.
Maxwell Furtado was the hero for Our Lady of Rosary as his 54th minute goal turned out to be the match-winner in their junior boys league match against St Rita, Curtorim at Fr Agnel ground, Verna.
Mourison Dias put Rosary HS ahead in the 6th minute but St Rita clawed back into the game with Stewart Demelo finding the net in the 23rd minute before Maxwell sealed it in his team’s favour.
The junior boys battle between Shree Ameya Vidyaprasarak Mandal HSS and VR Das Gauncar HSS at Verna was also a keenly contested affair with the match ending in a 1-1 draw. Ronson Soares appeared to have put VR Das in a strong position scoring in the 54th minute but five minutes later they conceded a penalty allowing SAVM to share the honours. Ashraf Hussain found the target from the spot.
In the college league, defending champions Rosary College, Navelim were on course notching an impressive 5-0 victory over CES College. Jaison Martins led the way for the winners scoring three goals at Ambelim ground. In another game, SS Dempo College, Altinho recorded the biggest victory of the day routing Goa College of Pharmacy, Panjim 14-0. Latish Kunkalkar, who booted three goals, was the top scorer for the winners.
