MARGAO: Pope John XXIII HS, Quepem overcame Marina English HS, Verna 4-1 via the tie-breaker to clinch Fr. Peter SVD Under-15 memorial football tournament, organized by SVD Seminary, at SVD Seminary ground, Raia, Saturday.
The teams started on a promising note but could not score in the first half.
Changing over, Marina went into an attacking mode and nearly scored a goal, but Yohann D’Souza’s beautiful volley hit the post. Marina continued their domination but the rival custodian Aliston Dias blocked every opportunity that came his way.
In the resulting tie-breaker, Melborn Pereira, Allwin Vaz, Joel Barreto and Rolan Rocha scored for Pope John XXIII HS. Cristo Fernandes scored the only goal for Marina English HS, Verna.
Earlier, Fr. Tony Menezes, Rector of SVD Seminary, Raia opened the proceedings with an aarti in honour of Fr Peter SVD in the presence of guest of honour Dominic Gaunkar.
Individual prizes awarded are as follows: Best goalkeeper Adam Khan (Deepvihar HS, Vasco), Best defender Jovan Fernandes (Bethany Convent HS, Sao Jose de Areal), Best midfielder Frazer Miranda (Our Lady of Rosary HS, Fatorda), Best forward Savio De Souza (Marina English HS, Verna), Highest goal scorer Melborn Pereira (Pope John XXIII, Quepem).
