Sports Minister Manohar Azgaonkar launched the Panchayat Yuva Krida Aur Khel Abhiyan (PYKKA) scheme under Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs disbursing Rs 39 lakh towards a one time capital grant to 23 panchayats for development of sports infrastructure, at a function organised by SAG, at Secretariat, Porvorim, Monday.
Four panchayats – Tamboxem, in Pernem taluka, Poinguinim, in Canacona taluka, Curtorim in Salcete and Thane in Sattari taluka, received Rs 5 lakh each while the rest 19 panchayats received Rs one lakh each.
The centrally sponsored scheme aims at promoting excellence in sports through a holistic and multipronged approach.  It also envisages creating network of basic infrastructure throughout the country, provide universal access to sports in rural areas and promote a sports culture among both boys and girls.
V M Prabhudesai, Executive Director, SAG, gave a presentation on the newly launched scheme. Dr Susana D’Souza, Director, Sports and Youth Affairs and Menino D’Souza, Director of Panchayats, spoke.
