PANJIM: Quepem Veterans edged out Navelim Veterans 5-4 via tie-breaker in the final of 1st All-Goa late Kanekar Veterans football trophy organized by Ponda Veterans, at sports complex ground, Ponda, on Sunday.
The teams were locked goalless at full time.
Due to slippery ground conditions, the teams played on a cautious note but Quepem had an upper hand over their opponents. Navelim keeper Avertano Furtado saved the match for his team with three crucial saves in the second session.
From the start, Quepem went into attack and within five minutes Rosario had a go from outside the box, only to be denied by Avertano. At other end, Domnic Cabral’s effort sailed inches over the cross bar.
In the second half, the teams were not successful in finding the match-winner.
In the tie-breaker Rosario Fernandes, Vincent Barbosa, John Abranches, Xavier Colaco and Jaison scored for Quepem, while Vincent Colaco, Ajay Acharya, Claudo Dias and Prashant Kurade scored for Navelim.
Individual prizes were awarded to First scorer of the final Vincent Colaco (Navelim Veterans), Best goalkeeper Anand Arkondkar (Ponda Veterans) and Best player of the tournament Domnic Cabral (Navelim).
Ponda Veterans felicitated former national football player Agnelo Fonseca.
Chief guest Dr Rufino Monteiro, chairman of GFDC; Anand Vargumekar and Louis Pires gave away the prizes. Quepem received Rs 20,000 alongwith the winners trophy while Navelim settled for Rs 15,000 plus rolling trophy.
