RACHOL: Rachol Seminary defeated Goa Veterans Football Club 2-1 in a friendly match organised by Rachol Seminary, on the occasion of Day of Diocesan Clerby celebrated by Archdiocese of Goa, at Rachol Seminary football ground, on Saturday.
The seminarians trusting on their stamina and pace began the match on a speedy note against the great experience and skills of the veterans, who had in their team the yesteryears’ greats of Goan football.
The Rachol Seminarians led 2-0 at the half time. Both the goals were scored by Clifford Fernandes, who was ably supported by Snyter Pereira and Leslie Noronha.
John Fernandes (a former Salcete FC goalkeeper), the custodian of the Veterans team, displayed some extraordinary skills under the bar thereby thwarting the efforts of the seminarians to increase their tally.
In the second half, the veterans came out strong and gained total control of the match. Mario Soares narrowed the margin for the Veterans through a spot-kick.
The veterans came close to equalize on several occasions but the Seminary defence stood tall to block the experienced attack of the veterans.
The Goa Veterans team was captained by Mathew D’Costa (Coach, Sporting Clube de Goa and Goa Santosh Trophy team). Derrick Pereira (Asst. coach, FC Goa), Alfred Fernandes (coach, Churchill Brothers), Jerry Fernandes (former Dempo player), Nelson Landes, Santan Furtado (former Salgaocar players) and Fr Salvador Carvalho (SVD) were some of the players who delighted the spectators with their magical touches.
