CANDOLIM: Sports Authority of India (SAI) Veterans defeated the hosts Candolim Veterans 1-0 in an exhibition football match, played at Dr Gustavo Monteiro Stadium, Candolim, here Saturday.
In an exciting match, both team played excellent football but the SAI Veterans had a slight edge over their rivals but the match remained goaless at the break.
Post resumption, SAI came close to scoring on many occasions as Alexander Fernandes’ and Benedict’s attempts missed the target.
Just 10 minutes before final whistle, SAI Veterans came up with a goal when Richard Rebello’s cross from the left flank was found by Atul who raced past the Candolim defence and sent a pin point pass to SAI skipper Frankie Mascarenhas who slammed the ball into the nets giving no chance to the Candolim keeper Xavier which eventually proved to be the match winner.
