Sangolda Lightning prevailed over Merces Sports Club 6-5 via the tie-breaker, after both teams were level 1-1 at full time, and moved into quarter-finals of V.M. Salgaocar Trophy football tournament organised by Saligao Sporting Club at Saligao ground on Wednesday. The teams were level 1-1 at half time.
Sangolda Lightning scored an early goal in the 5th minute through Agnelo Quadros to take a 1-0 lead. Merces restored parity in the 10th minute through Austin Fernandes. Merces could have forged ahead, but their strikers wasted many goal scoring opportunities.
Changing over, Merces tried to dominate the match, but their strikers were off target. Sangolda Lightning had their share of exchanges but their strikers, especially Agnelo Quadros failed to convert from close.
In the ensuing tie-breaker, it was Sangolda Lightning who kept their cool to slot home all their penalties and win the tie-breaker 5-4. Swanand, Daniel, Agnelo, Ramesh and Joseph converted for Sangolda Lightning while Meces scored through Anthony, Joe, Domingos and Anthony Fernandes.
In the first quarter-final, F.C. Siolim will take on Adarsh Yuvak Sangh on Sunday, April 12.
