CUNCOLIM: Sao Jose de Areal got the better of Don Bosco Oratory Fatorda 6-3 via the tie-breaker to move into the quarter-finals of the Mc Dowells’ No 1 Yarri Premier Cup inter-village football tournament for South Goa, organised by Cuncolim Union and Anjuna Club at Government Village School ground, Cuncolim on Tuesday.
However, it was Sao Jose de Areal ’s opponents Don Bosco Oratory who took the lead — as early as the 15th minute to test the spirit and commitment of the Areal team.
Don Bosco’s Ashley Araujo netted the first goal of the match with a power drive shot in the 15th minute but the joy was short lived as within two minutes, Bersel Viegas equalised for Areal with a placement shot off David Colaco connect.
Changing over, both the team introduced fresh legs and went all out in search of match winner.
In the 46th minute, Danny Dias who received the pass from his colleague unleashed a shot giving no chance to the Sao Jose de Areal goalkeeper Joseph Monteriro to regain the lead.
Down by 1-2 , Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club pressurized the rival defence and swarmed
all over the rival territory and their efforts bore the fruit when Bersel Viegas cancelled the lead off Raymond Fernandes through pass in the 63rd minute .
In the resultant tie-breaker, Sao Jose De Areal netted through Bersel Viegas, Aggio Antao, Hasten Dias and Joseph Monteiro and for Don Bosco only Necil Pinto scored.
Earlier, the tournament was declared open by former India international and Dempo SC player Mahesh Gawli.
