Clube Sao Minguel de Taleigao scored a narrow 1-0 victory against Sao Jose de Areal in the opening match of 39th Custodio Memorial Football Tournament at Raia panchayat ground on Sunday. There was no score at half time.
Areal attempted two long long rangers in the 11th and 17th minutes, but they did not pose problem to the rivals as goalkeeper Jose Godinho was alert.
The pace of the proceedings rose by several notches after the break and Anthony Pereira of Areal let fly a fierce shot which, however, flew over the crossbar.
A fine run down the centre by Sao Minguel’s Valencio Estrocio was thwarted at the goalmouth by Fredrick of Areal. Casmiro Peixtoto of Sao Minguel then blasted over in the 52nd minute.
The match-winner came soon after as Gautam Kankankar ran solo from the centre and made no mistake in slotting the ball into the net from the area.
Gautam was earlier shown the yellow card.
