MARGAO: Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club eke out Raia Sporting Club 1-0 to sail into the quarter-final of All-Goa Davorlim Soccer Cup inter-village football tournament organized by Sporting Club of Davorlim at Panchayat ground, Davorlim on Monday. There was no score at half time.
Areal dominated the opening sessions but failed to find breakthrough. Mariano Rebello was the worst offenders as he muffed two sitters.
At the other hand, Raia took time to settle down and once they found the rhythm they called the shots against the rival citadel but were unsuccessful.
After the break, Raia put up an improved display and threatened the rival citadel umpteen times but their forwards Joston Barbosa and Wilfred Gomes were erratic inside the rival penalty box.
The all important goal came in the 45th minute when Mariano Rebello picked up the ball from his own half and beat the rival goalkeeper with clinical finish.
Stung by that setback, Raia tried their level best but the rival defenders stood tall in protecting the slender lead.
