RAIA: In a nail-biting finale that had fans on the edge of their seats, South Goa United emerged champions in the Vedanta U-15 Youth Cup defeating their arch-rivals FC Goa in a penalty shootout that ended 5-4, at Sinquerim ground, recently.
The initial 45 minutes saw both teams locked in a relentless battle for supremacy, but the first half ended with a frustrating 0-0 score line. It was clear that neither side was willing to concede an inch, and the deadlock remained unbroken.

The second half, however, brought about a dramatic twist. FC Goa, determined to break the stalemate, took the initiative.
Vernon Cardozo of FC Goa unleashed a powerful shot that sent South Goa United’s goalkeeper Rhyce Barreto, scrambling. However, luck was on South Goa United’s side as the ball miraculously struck the woodwork, denying FC Goa a much-needed lead.
Then, in a moment of brilliance, Jayden Pinto of South Goa United took a long shot, which deflected off Casvino’s head, setting the stage for Alex Fernandes to shatter the deadlock and give South Goa United the lead in the 41 minute.
Just when it seemed South Goa United might secure a straightforward victory, FC Goa had a late surge.
In the final minutes of regulation time, Sam Pereira managed to equalise the score in the 58 minute, sending the game into a thrilling penalty shootout, much to the crowd’s delight.
The penalty shootout was a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Shiva Lohra of South Goa United missed his penalty, keeping fans anxious. However, Elton Fernandes, Enrique Rodrigues, Jayden Pinto, Alex Fernandes scored goals.
On the FC Goa side, Cayden Rodrigues’ penalty was saved by South Goa United’s resilient goalkeeper Rhyce of South Goa United.
Lesvin Rebelo and Freden Mendes successfully converted their penalties, but the pressure got to Sam Pereira, who missed the crucial shot, narrowing FC Goa’s chances for victory.
The grand finale was graced by distinguished personalities. Chief guest Dr Caitano Jose Fernandes, GFA president, alongside guests of honour Nilesh Zore (Vedanta Sesa Goa deputy head CSR), Brahmanand Shankwalkar (Padma Shree and former national team captain), Avertano Furtado (vice president AWES) and Derrick Pereira (president AWES and technical director of FC Goa), added prestige to the event.
While addressing, Dr Caitano emphasised that this tournament stands as evidence of the exceptional talent among the State’s youth.
He said, “To all the young participants, remember that you are the future of Goa. I appreciate Vedanta Sesa Goa and AWES for their outstanding initiative in organising this tournament, which not only ignites a greater passion for football but also inspires and encourages our young talents to pursue their dreams on the field.”
Brahmanand offered his appreciation to all the participating teams and the community members who came to support the tournament.
He believes there’s a promising future for Goan football and his message to the youth is, “Never give up and always listen to your coaches. If you can or leave out, no problem, stay with enthusiasm every time you play. Congratulations to the following team and players for winning individual awards.”
