MAPUSA: The Airtel Goa Super League came to a dejected end after Churchill Brothers Sports Club failed to report for today’s final round encounter, the title decider against Sporting Clube de Goa, at Duler Stadium, here, Tuesday.
Sporting Clube reported at the venue as per the fixture and gained a walk-over, hence being crowned the champions.
The Goa Football Association made no changes to its fixtures even though Churchill Brothers had requested for postponement to the match, citing their I-League engagement against Kolkata’s Mohammedan Sporting on Saturday.
The Red Machines had only played on Sunday, defeating Sesa Football Academy 2-1, to move up to 26 points, one behind league leaders Sporting Clube, with an opportunity to battle for the title challenge.
However, with a day’s rest, the Churchill Brothers management did not want to put their players at risk as most of them are nursing injuries.
On the other hand, Sporting Clube team, which will be travelling to Bangalore to take on Bengaluru Football Club in an I-League encounter on Friday did not give any excuse of the same and reported for today’s match in true sense of sportsmanship.
Ahead of the tie, Sporting Clube were clear favourites given their recent form under their Spanish coach Oscar Bruzon.
All arrangements were made by the organizers including security, ambulance, ball boys, stretcher boys, announcer, so also the match officials were present.
