PANJIM: Vasco Veterans held their nerve in a tense penalty shootout to overcome Ilhas Veterans, 5-3 and emerge as champions in the recently concluded all-Goa veterans football tournament, organised by Mix Friends of Santa Cruz and played at the Santa Cruz ground.
The highly competitive final saw both teams struggle to break the deadlock, with the match ending goalless at the end of regulation time.
In the decisive penalty shootout, Vasco Veterans converted all five of their spot-kicks through Shaikh Niaze, Nelson, Agostinho, Roque and Presley. Meanwhile, Ilhas Veterans managed to find the net only three times, with successful attempts from Nevil Araujo, Marcelino Rosario and Paixao.
Vasco Veterans were awarded a cash prize of Rs 30,000, while the runners-up, Ilhas Veterans, had to settle for Rs 20,000.
