Volty emerges champ in coconut breaking

PANJIM: Volty Ribeiro from Agassaim got the better of Agostinho Coutinho of Calangute in the final of 15th All-Goa coconut breaking contest organised by Active Boys of Calangute, at Calangute Association ground, on Sunday.

PANJIM: Volty Ribeiro from Agassaim got the better of Agostinho Coutinho of Calangute in the final of 15th All-Goa coconut breaking contest organised by Active Boys of Calangute, at Calangute Association ground, on Sunday.
In all, 22 people participated in this traditional sport held on the occasion of the feast of St Alex, patron saint of Calangute. All the contestants were allowed to use five coconuts each. Volty Ribeiro entered the final with three coconuts and Agostinho with two.
In the deciding hit, Agostinho’s coconut broke leaving Volty as the winner.
Chief guest Filipe Dias, vice-president of Goa Boxing Association gave away the prizes. The winner and runner-up were awarded Rs 10,000 and Rs 7,000 respectively along with trophies. The third place winner Benedict Rodrigues of Calangute was awarded Rs 3,000.
Bogu Cardozo, Anthony Fernandes, Salvador Lobo, Alirio D’Souza, Umesh Simepuruskar and Louis D’Souza were some dignitaries present.
