Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya has become the centre of attention during the ongoing IPL 2026 season after reports emerged about his fitness concerns and travel updates ahead of key matches.
Initially, multiple reports suggested that Pandya did not travel with the Mumbai Indians squad to Raipur for their crucial fixture, raising concerns among fans and analysts. The development came at a sensitive time for the franchise, which has struggled with consistency this season and relies heavily on its captain for both leadership and all-round performance.
According to early updates, Pandya was dealing with back spasms, an issue that had already forced him to miss Mumbai Indians’ previous match against Lucknow Super Giants. The franchise had issued a brief statement confirming his absence, saying, “Hardik Pandya is unwell with back spasms; hence, Suryakumar Yadav is captain for today’s game.”
The situation sparked uncertainty regarding his availability for upcoming matches, especially the high-profile clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Teammate Ryan Rickelton also addressed the situation, stating that he was not fully aware of the severity of the issue but expected Pandya to rejoin the squad soon.
During this phase, Suryakumar Yadav stepped in as captain in Pandya’s absence, highlighting the team’s readiness to adjust leadership temporarily. However, Pandya’s absence created concern as he remains one of the most influential players in the squad, contributing both as a top-order finisher and a key bowling option.
On the performance front, Pandya has also endured a relatively quiet season with the bat, scoring 146 runs in eight matches at a strike rate of 136.45. His bowling contributions have also been limited, adding further pressure on his role within the team setup.
Amid speculation, a later update brought a more positive development. Reports indicated that Pandya is now likely to join the Mumbai Indians squad in Raipur ahead of their fixture against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Sunday. While he did not travel with the first batch of players on Wednesday, it is understood that he will link up with the team later in the week.
Sources suggest that Pandya was advised a precautionary rest of around a week after the back spasm he picked up during the match against Chennai Super Kings. The medical and coaching staff have reportedly taken a cautious approach, ensuring that his recovery is prioritised before returning to full match intensity.
Despite earlier uncertainty, there is now a sense of relief within the franchise camp. It is believed that there is no major cause for concern, and even if Pandya misses the upcoming RCB fixture, the team management expects him to return shortly thereafter and resume his role as captain.
The decision on his participation is expected to be taken closer to match day, depending on his fitness assessment. The Mumbai Indians think tank is reportedly following a similar cautious strategy used previously with senior players who returned after injury breaks.
With Pandya’s situation now appearing more stable, Mumbai Indians will hope his return strengthens both their leadership structure and overall performance as they enter a crucial phase of IPL 2026.
