Yashasvi Jaiswal smashes record to give India upper hand vs West Indies

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s unbeaten 173 propels India into a commanding position against West Indies in the second Test at Delhi.

India put on a dominant batting display on Day 1 of the second Test against West Indies at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi, led by opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who remained unbeaten on 173. This stellar innings not only broke multiple records but also solidified Jaiswal’s position among the top performers in the World Test Championship (WTC). With seven WTC centuries, he now ranks second among openers, just behind Rohit Sharma, who has nine.

Jaiswal also joined elite company by registering five scores of 150+ in WTC history, matching players like Kane Williamson and Marnus Labuschagne, with Joe Root still leading at eight. In Indian Test cricket overall, Jaiswal is third for most 150+ scores, trailing Virender Sehwag (14) and Sunil Gavaskar (11).

Another young star, Sai Sudharsan, impressed at number three, scoring 87 runs under pressure and earning the confidence of the team management. His performance will be vital ahead of India’s Test series against South Africa.

West Indies struggle continues
West Indies, who were already under scrutiny, struggled once again. Head coach Daren Sammy had earlier described their cricket system as “like cancer,” and the team failed to rise to the occasion. Only Jomel Warrican shone with the ball, taking two wickets. India finished Day 1 on 318, aiming to add at least 200 more runs to secure a likely innings victory.

With their current form, West Indies face a tough challenge to bounce back, while India looks to continue its winning momentum and register its first series win in the ongoing WTC cycle.
