CURCHOREM: Taking cognizance of the Herald report highlighting that the water spraying system at Curchorem railway yard has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, Curchorem Health Officer Dr Mohanrao Desai along with Sanitary Inspector Gajanan Naik visited both the pump houses in the yard on Wednesday.
After inspecting both the sites, Dr Desai found that these are potential sites for mosquitoes breeding. “I will prepare a report and sent it to the area officer of the railways at Vasco and also to other authorities concerned including Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council to take immediate action and clean the wells as well as the surrounding area and to keep it in hygienic condition,” Dr Desai told Herald.
Expressing his deep anguish at the situation at the railway station, Dr Desai said that authorities should not only propagate Swach Bharat slogan but must act and set example for others by keeping their surroundings clean and in a hygienic condition.
It may be recalled that during the boom of mining activities in the State, South Western Railway authorities had constructed two pump houses for water spraying system (WSS) to sprinkle water on iron ore in the yard to prevent dust pollution.
Since the mining activities have stopped, the ore is not brought to Curchorem by railways and therefore both the WSS are not in operation and the water in the wells has became stagnant and potential ground for mosquitoes breeding inviting vector borne diseases like malaria and dengue.
The residents are living in fear as there might be some reptiles in the area as wild bushes have grown around both the structures and it can be detrimental to human lives as the bushes are also grown in the tile factory premises which was permanently closed down few years back.
