SANVORDEM: It looks like there are different sets of rules for different people, one for the common man and another for mining barons, this was witnessed at Sanvordem on Tuesday, as heavy movement of iron ore laden trucks were seen plying, thereby not adhering to the rules of State-imposed curfew.
Curchorem Cacora Municipal Council Councillor Balkrishna Hodarkar said that despite a 15-day State curfew imposed by the government, a free hand has been given to the mining activities in some part of the State including Sanvordem.

“The government should first define what curfew means. Why there is a double standard treatment towards the people. It is the common man who is suffering. Today, the situation is gone from bad to worst. COVID cases are rising day by day wherein Goans are losing their lives to the deadly virus and if this situation continues it will be a big stress on the government machinery, which is working day and night for the betterment of the State,” said Hodarkar.
Shiv Sena South Goa District President Alexy Fernandes allegedly accused the government of following the ‘divide and rule’ policy between the Goans on mining ore transportation, presently going on in Ponda and Sanvordem.
“There should be equal treatment for Goans. Today, mining operation is carried out at few places while on the other side the truck owners have to keep their vehicles idle as they don’t have work. This is disgusting, as the government on one side speaks about supporting all mining dependents and the other side backs a few,” he said.
“Rules and regulations should be followed by every citizen of the State and no special treatment or preference should be given to a section of society,” Fernandes added.
